Jean Wetta 2004
New Paintings

"Perhaps most compelling about Jean Wetta's work is its underlying mystical and spiritual sensibility. Far from being straightforwardly representaional, her works are invested with metaphor and mysticism. She credits her grandmother with instilling in her a rare appreciation of the wonderful and eccentric aspects of human existence, blending reality and imagination in an atmosphere charged with delight in creativity. Her grand-mother's strong Catholic faith was an equally rich and influential legacy, passed on in full measure. As a result, each of Jean Wetta's paintings is a small revela-tion, in which the viewer discovers that what appears ordinary is invested with deeper meaning, and that what seems comforting can carry hints of a more ambiguous sometimes darker nature". Quote from an essay by Eleanor Jones Harvey, Chief Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum, for JEAN CARRUTHERS WETTA: A Survey 1984-1998.

Ms. Wetta's work can be found in a number of museum, public and private collections in the United States including: the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Houston, Texas; The Contemporary Arts Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii; The South Texas Institute for the Arts, Corpus Christi, Texas; Southwestern Bell Telephone Corporation, St. Louis, Missouri; RAYOVAC Corporation, Madison, Wisconsin; Fulbright and Jaworski, Houston, Texas and Moody National Bank, Galveston, Texas.
