Marianne Green 2005
Disparate Housewife

In an obvious reference to the to the highly successful TV series and popular cultural phenomenon of the Desperate Housewive, Ms. Green has appropriated this term and adapted it to also describe her current state of being. Playing the "disparate," or diverse and sometimes conflicting roles of mother and painter, model and wife, there is always a struggle to "keep it together," or at least give the appearance that everything is as it should be.

This series of paintings reflects that dichotomy, while still presenting a cohesive facade. The fanciful patterning, which has been central to Ms. Green's work for many years now, and the figurative imagery in the foreground combine to create a feeling of beauty, humor, and order, despite their seemingly unrelated association. In addition, as a twenty-year veteran of the fashion industry Ms. Green has found herself in the unique position of both creating images of desire as a model, and receiving them through the countless home and fashion catalogues she, like nearly all of us, receives on a daily basis.

In her own words, "the function of these catalogues is to entice its viewers (mostly women) to purchase the beautiful objects of desire portrayed within, and/or promote an idealized domestic environment." These catalogues have become a major source of inspiration in her paintings because they "represent a place where all those issues come together."

Marianne Green received her M.F.A. from the University of Houston in 1997. Her exhibitions include: “Assistance League of Houston Celebrates Texas Art 2000," Houston, TX, juried by Terrie Sultan; The Galveston Arts Center, Galveston, TX; Juried Exhibition at McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas, Texas; The Blaffer Gallery Art Museum at the University of Houston, Houston, TX; University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX; University of Texas Performing Art Center, Austin, Texas; and Santa Chiara Art Center, Castiglione Fiorentino, Italy.
