McMurtrey Gallery is thrilled to present new work by well-known Houston sculptor Troy Woods. "A Reason to Move" is Woods' first solo exhibition in Houston since 1999, and includes both sculpture and drawing.
His new work, much like the previous, is organic, graceful, and even seductive. Woods' mastery of his materials is evident in the flawless manufacturing of the stainless steel fixtures, and the wood, so highly polished into flowing forms that it often appears liquid. His use of exotic woods like ebony and blood wood, in addition to maple, gives the work a new, richer dimension.
Inspired by the rhythmic movement of candlelight swaying in a breeze, these latest works suggest a sense of constant motion. Whether continuous or changing like with candlelight, the shadows created by Woods' sculpture are as important to the work as the play of shadows on a wall are to the experience of viewing candlelight.

It is while contemplating the movement of a flame that Woods began to question his own understanding of non-living and inanimate. Although the flame was not alive it was not static, in the same way that an expired fly continues to move through decomposition or other outside forces. As the artist puts it, "There are no still-lives in life, so why would they exist in art? There is a reason to move."
Troy Woods received his B.F.A. from the University of Houston, where he graduated summa cum laude. Woods has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and has completed commissions for public and private collections, including ones for Trinity Episcopal Church and Louisiana Place in downtown Houston.
