McMurtrey Gallery is pleased to announce Marianne Green's upcoming exhibit of new paintings. As with all of Ms. Green's work, pattern plays an essential role. As she explains,
I am continuing my exploration of pattern as a vehicle for visualizing, summarizing, and communicating characteristics of my world. I'm interested in the formal structure of pattern - its fundamental use of line, composition, and form - as a means for making a painting. The two-dimensionality of painting with its emphasis on surface enables me to incorporate ornamentation, superficial facades and artifice – all critical concepts in the fashion lexicon. My choice of pattern - sometimes nostalgic, other times contemplative - has little to do with any commentary on a particular era or stylistic trend, but is based more on an intuitive process that reflects the relationship between figure and ground.
Working as a model in the fashion industry for 26 years - now retired - has been a vital part of what has always informed the work. My existence in such a physically-oriented environment with great emphasis on the surface and where all modes of communication were non-verbal, driven by the use of one's body as a form of display, illusion, and an ideal, has surprisingly become the foundation on which these paintings are made.

However, the beauty of Ms. Green's paintings is more than just skin deep. Her process of painting and then sanding down the surface reveals hints of underlying layers, creating a sense of mystery and visual intrigue.
