Sydney Yeager 2007
Jump

McMurtrey Gallery is pleased to introduce "Jump," a new body of paintings by Austin artist Sydney Yeager. As the artist explains:

"I titled the show 'Jump' because the action of jumping implies both exuberance and anxiety. You jump when someone scares you. You jump for joy. When you jump, you’re not quite sure where you’ll land.

The surfaces of these paintings are in constant and unpredictable motion. As your eye follows convoluted paths which suddenly change directions, looping inward or cascading downward, you are momentarily suspended as though in a leap: almost flying, but bound to land again. The question is: Where will you land… on solid ground, or on a shifting, sliding surface?

I hope these paintings create a sensation of instability, but also one of exhilaration. A leap from a high cliff into a cool pool of water."

Sydney Yeager has received numerous grants and awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award in Painting, Printmaking, Drawing, and Artist’s Books in 1996; the Grumbacher Award; and was a recipient of the Cultural Arts Grant awarded by the City of Austin Arts Commission.

Ms. Yeager’s exhibitions include: Women and Their Work, Austin, Texas; Austin Museum of Art, Austin, Texas; Galveston Arts Center, Galveston, Texas; and the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas. Her paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Austin Museum of Art, Austin, Texas; the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas; American Airlines, Austin, Texas; the Barrett Collection, Dallas, Texas; and the Belo Collection, Dallas, Texas. Ms. Yeager also completed a residency at the American Academy in Rome in 2005, and received an Austin Fairchild Art Foundation Award in 2002.
