Ellen Berman 2002
New Paintings

Ellen Berman was born in Paris, Texas and received degrees at the University of Texas and the University of Houston. She has exhibited her work at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Laguana Gloria Museum, the Amarillo Art Museum and the Art Center of Waco.

In this new body of work Ms. Berman uses her familiar vocabulary of objects, bowls, pitchers, fruit, vegetables and flowers. In this exhibit one finds there is more color-- rich primary colors on muted backgrounds of yellow and blue.

And below the surface is the ever present mystery.

In her statement Ms. Berman says, "Painting pictures of objects from the most ordinary worlds--the table, the kitchen, the grocery store--allows me to look at them long and differently. In a way it's like trying to live an examined life. The challenge becomes how to transcend the ordinary and how to find the illuminations that in within."
